Measure at the narrowest point of your dog’s neck, just as tight or loose as you would like the new collar to fit. The collar should be snug, without being so tight that it will cause discomfort or loose enough to slide over your dog’s head.
As a rule of thumb, a well-fitting collar should leave just enough room for you to slide two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck.
MEASURING: Even though you can expect some degree of adjust-ability with your new dog collar, it is important to measure your dog carefully.
If you are satisfied with the fit of your dog’s current collar, measure that collar from the center bar of the buckle to the farthest hole. THIS collar is sized from the center bar of the buckle to the farthest hole (See diagram below). Some brands measure from the center bar of the buckle to the CENTER hole.
- Please also take into account that each collar will have 2″ of adjustability. Given the example of a 14″ dog collar, a 14″ collar will adjust from 12″ to 14″.
- If you don’t have a tape measure, your can measure your dog’s neck with a string then measure the string with a flat ruler.
- A rule of thumb is to leave an allowance for two fingers to fit between the collar and the dog for a comfortable fit. The collar should not be so tight that it will cause discomfort or so loose that it slides over the dog’s head.

- Remember that puppies grow quickly, so it is important to check the tightness of your dog collars.
- You should always be able to put two fingers between the dog and collar.
- Inspect and replace a collar or a leash as soon as it shows signs of wear that threatens the integrity of the collar/leash.
